The night-blooming cereus flower, brought to Hawaii in the early 1800s by a traveler passing from Mexico, was a gift to a missionary wife, Mrs. Bingham. When Queen regent, Ka‘ahumanu ordered the construction of rock walls in 1931 to prevent cattle from wandering onto the property, her friend Mrs. Bingham celebrated the completion of the wall in 1936 by planting the cactus flower near Punahou’s main entrance. The exquisite Punahou cactus thrives on the same rock wall where it was rooted nearly 200 years ago. The flowers bloom again each summer evening, resharing the gift with all who experience the beautiful night blooms.
