In 1819 French explorer Jacques Étienne Victor Arago documented the sights of Maui in his Journal de Bord. The journal served as a logbook used to record details of the expedition, including the sun’s position, wind direction and strength, and other observations.

The caption "Vue de l'île de Mowhée, prise du mouillage de Lahaina" translates to “Nearshore view of Maui from the anchorage at Lahaina.” Arago sketched what is believed to be the first known Western drawing of Lahaina.
