John Young (1909–1997) lived as vibrantly as he painted. A prominent self-taught abstract expressionist born in Honolulu, he was known for fluid, gestural works influenced by Chinese calligraphy and Zen Buddhism. Drawn to movement and spontaneity, he captured horses and figures with bold, energetic strokes that reflected his own adventurous spirit. A world traveler and collector, he drew inspiration from treasures like Han dynasty horses and from his journeys abroad, where he gathered an extensive collection of art from Asia, Africa, and the Americas. He later bequeathed some of this collection to the University of Hawaii to support art education, and also established the John Young Museum of Art on campus, furthering his commitment to sharing art with the community. Rarely without a sketchbook in hand, he was equally known for his warmth, generosity, and love of people, often leaving whimsical sketches on napkins or tablecloths as a reminder of how naturally art flowed from him. From humble beginnings, John built a remarkable career, and he never forgot the importance of lifting others up. Through the John Young Foundation, his legacy continues by providing scholarships for aspiring artists to follow their own creative journeys.

In honor of that legacy, we have collaborated with the Foundation on the Year of the Horse Mulberry Silk Shirt, featuring John Young’s original artwork. Reflecting his fascination with the horse as a symbol of strength, freedom, and perseverance, this exclusive piece celebrates not only his extraordinary art but also his enduring gift to future generations of creators.
